Colorado Boy Injured in Horseback Riding Accident Meets the Heroes Who Brought Him Home

It’s been four months since Stefan Keryan, 9, was injured in Belize during a horrific horseback riding accident.  Stefan was vacationing with his family on their first cruise when they stopped in Belize for the day.  That’s when tragedy struck.

Stefan was fighting for his life in a Belize hospital when Geno Haggan, owner of Peak Medevac, saw his story on the news and sent one of his medical planes and medical crew to fly Stefan back home to Colorado, all for free.

According to his mom Heidi, Stefan has been making great strides in his healing process and is now back in school.  Heidi remarked that he still has some restrictions, such as no PE, but he loves to go to class and learn.  He loves math!

Stefan made two visits to the hangar to meet those responsible for his safe return to the US. The first reunion Stefan met Danny Beckle, the RN who was cared for him during the flight.  Stefan was also able to see and go in the actual plane that he took home from Belize.

“Look at that big smile!”

On Stefan’s next visit, he met Geno Haggan who was responsible for launching the mission to bring Stefan home.  “I’m glad to see he’s doing so good,” said Geno Haggan after meeting Stefan for the first time.  “Look at that big smile!”  A shy Stefan grinned and shook his hand.  When asked what it feels like to meet the heroes that helped Stefan, Heidi replied, “I can’t put it into words.  It’s almost surreal…”

He also met Roman Valles, the Respiratory Therapist onboard the flight that day.  Roman was also a recipient of a free rescue flight courtesy of Peak Medevac.  Roman was working in Texas when he contracted COVID-19.  He wasn’t doing well and needed to get home to his family when Geno Haggan stepped in and sent an air ambulance to bring Roman home.

Coming May 2023, Peak Medevac is launching a national campaign for donating charity flights to help those in need. The program is dedicating 72 free medical charity flights per year, starting with local communities where Peak Medevac’s bases are located as well as nationally. Peak Medevac plans to work with charity organizations and hospitals nationwide.

Peak Medevac Donates Medical Flight for 8-year old in Horseback Riding Accident

Englewood, CO - Peak Medevac stepped into action and provided a free medical flight when 8-year old Stefan Keryan was fighting for his life in a hospital in Belize. He suffered multiple injuries from a horrific horseback riding accident and needed to get back to the United States.

“Let’s go get this kid and bring him home!”

“Let’s go get Stefan; let’s go get this kid and bring him home,” said Geno Haggan, CEO of Peak Medevac, a global air medical transport company based out of Colorado, after hearing the news of the tragic horseback riding accident.  “I knew we could help. That’s why we’re in business is to come to the aid of others and help those in need,” stated Haggan.

Stefan was vacationing with his family when tragedy struck. They were on their first ever cruise and one of the stops for the day was in Belize. They planned to go on a tour to a monkey sanctuary which also included a horseback ride.

According to Heidi Keryan, Stefan’s mother, she heard yelling and looked over to see a horse running toward them. As the horse ran past, she saw the saddle was flipped and her son was being dragged by his foot. The horse ended up dragging Stefan for almost two miles along the gravel pavement before someone jumped in a car and stopped the horse down the road.

When one of Peak Medevac’s employees saw the story on Denver7 News, she immediately alerted Geno Haggan who jumped into action. The Peak Medevac Team was deployed and within 24-hours they were doing an international rescue. “I am very proud of my team and how quickly things came together to get this little boy back to Colorado,” said Haggan. "I really love Colorado and I’m thankful to be able to help out Colorado families," he continued.

According to the family, Stefan suffered third degree burns on his back, arms and leg, and also required surgery to replace part of his scalp. Stefan arrived at the Centennial Airport around 11 p.m. Sunday and was immediately transported to Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora.
